What to Expect
Your First Visit
Knowing what to expect during your first visit to the oral surgeon can help you feel calm and prepared for your appointment. Every new patient must have an exam and consultation prior to their surgery. During this visit, you will get to know your surgeon and our friendly and caring office staff. You will also have time to discuss any questions or concerns you have about the procedure. The exam will include dental x-rays, a comprehensive review of your health history, and an estimate of your out-of-pocket cost. In many wisdom tooth cases, we can complete both the consultation and surgery on the same day.
At Your Initial Consultation
Your initial appointment will consist of a consultation explaining your diagnosis and treatment options. Occasionally, surgery can be performed the same day as the consultation. However, a complex medical history or treatment plan may require an evaluation and a second appointment to provide treatment on another day.
Please assist us by providing the following information at the time of your consultation:
- Your surgical referral slip and x-rays. If your dentist or physician has taken x-rays you may request that they forward them to our office. If there is not enough time, please pick them up and bring them to our office. If additional films are necessary they can be taken at our facility, but this is your financial responsibility.
- A list of medications you are presently taking.
- If you have medical or dental insurance, bring a copy of your insurance card(s) as well as the identifying personal information for the subscriber of the insurance. This will save time and allow us to verify your benefits and process any claims.
IMPORTANT: All patients under the age of 18 must be accompanied by a parent or guardian at the consultation visit. This is not negotiable.
A preoperative consultation and physical examination is mandatory for patients undergoing IV anesthesia for surgery. Please have nothing to eat or drink eight hours prior to your surgery. You will also need an adult to stay in our office during your surgery and drive you home. We recommend that an adult stay with you for 24 hours after receiving IV anesthesia.
Please alert the office if you have a medical condition that may be of concern prior to surgery (i.e., diabetes, high blood pressure, artificial heart valves and joints, rheumatic fever, etc.) or if you are currently taking any medications (i.e., heart medications, aspirin, blood thinners, medications for osteoporosis, etc.).
We try our best to stay on schedule to minimize your waiting. Due to the fact Dr. Eaton provides many types of oral surgery services, various circumstances may lengthen the time allocated for a procedure. Emergency cases can also arise and cause delays. We appreciate your understanding and patience.
